What Are the Different SASSA Grant Types?
If you’re living in South Africa and struggling to make ends meet like I was not too long ago knowing which SASSA grants are available can make a big difference.
I’ve either applied for these myself or helped family members do it, so I’ll walk you through each grant type and what to expect. All of these amounts are based on the most recent updates starting April 2025. And the good news is that these amounts will increase again in October, 2025.
1. SASSA Older Person’s Grant
My grandmother started receiving this grant when she turned 60.
- If you’re between 60 and 74, you’ll get R2,315 a month.
- If you’re 75 or older, it goes up slightly to R2,335.
Just make sure you’re not already getting another SASSA grant and that your income is below the limit. You’ll need your green barcoded ID or smart ID card and proof of income (if any).
Tip: Apply early don’t wait until your birthday month!
2. SASSA Disability Grant
My cousin was diagnosed with a long-term illness and couldn’t work. We helped her apply for this grant.
- As of April 2025, it pays R2,315 per month.
- You’ll need to go for a medical assessment at a government facility. They’ll tell you if your condition qualifies as permanent or temporary.
Tip: Keep copies of all your medical documents you’ll need them when reapplying.
3. SASSA Care Dependency Grant
If you’re raising a child with a serious disability, this grant helps a lot.
One of my neighbours cares for her son full-time this is how she manages.
- You’ll receive R2,315 per child, monthly.
- The child must be under 18 and must pass a medical test through SASSA.
Tip: Make sure the doctor’s report clearly explains the child’s need for full-time care.
4. SASSA War Veterans Grant
Very few people still qualify for this one. My late grandfather used to receive it.
- The amount is now R2,335 per month.
- You must have served in World War II or the Korean War and be over 60 or disabled.
Tip: You’ll need official proof of service military papers, discharge forms, etc.
5. SASSA Child Support Grant
This one’s common I know many parents who rely on it every month.
- From April 2025, it’s R560 per child.
- You must be the primary caregiver, and the child must live with you in South Africa.
Tip: Even if you’re an aunt, grandmother, or older sibling caring for the child, you can apply if you have the right documents.
6. Foster Child Grant
If a court has placed a child in your care, this grant helps cover their needs.
- You’ll get R1,250 per child, each month.
- You must have a valid court order naming you as the foster parent.
Tip: Keep your court papers safe SASSA may ask for them again during reviews.
I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference these grants can make for groceries, school supplies, or even transport. If you or someone you know qualifies, don’t wait.
What is the Difference Between “R350 Status Check” and “R370 Status Check”?
Well, previously, SASSA SRD Grant was known as SASSA R350 grant, which was paid until April 2024.
In May 2024, SASSA increased the amount to R370, that’s why people now search for R370 status check instead of R350 status check.
Why is My SASSA R370 Still Approved but with No Payment?
If your SASSA R370 is approved but you haven’t received your Payment, then there could be number of reasons. For example, if your Banking details are not verified, or incorrect, or you have put someone else’s account details you may not receive your Payment.
But that’s not always the issue in every case, sometimes there’s system backlog, thus you should wait, or keep checking your SASSA Status. And if you don’t see your payment despite having zero errors, it’s better to call SASSA directly on their official number at 0800 60 10 11.
What Should You Do If Your SASSA Status Check Fails?
If you keep seeing, “SASSA Status Check Failed” despite multiple attempts, it means that your application did not go through properly, and you will need to follow few steps to fix that.
First of all, wait a few hours, sometimes during peak hours SASSA websites goes down for maintenance or due to traffic overload.
If nothing works for you, try starting a new application, and this time make sure you don’t end up missing important information like banking details, contact details and other information.
Plus, verify your Banking Details, if you are using someone else’s banking details you might still get a Failed SASSA Status error.
And if everything goes right, resubmit the application, you’ll end up qualifying if you actually deserve the grant but of course after SASSA Means test.
Why is my SASSA Status Still Pending?
If you see pending in your SASSA application Status, it means your Application is still being processed, you will soon have a Approved Application or declined. But in most cases, SASSA usually approved the Pending Application.
For Example, during the last days of the month, when SASSA starts approving payments for SASSA SRD R370, it usually put the application status in Pending for few days before actual payment dates. So, it is recommended to keep checking your SASSA Application Status.
Who Can Get the SRD R370 Grant in 2025? SASSA SRD Grant Eligibility Criteria
If you’re like me, trying to make ends meet and hoping to qualify for the SASSA SRD grant, it’s super important to know if you tick all the right boxes. The rules for 2025 have changed slightly, so let me explain them the way I understood them plain and simple.
1. You must be unemployed or Earning very little
If you’re not working or your total monthly income is less than R624, you can apply. That’s the income limit. If you make more than that, even just R10 extra, SASSA might reject you.
2. You Must be a Legal resident in South Africa
You need to be a South African citizen, refugee, asylum seeker, or have a special permit. I used my green ID card when I applied, but others I know used their permit numbers and still got approved.
3. Age matters
You must be 18 years or older, but also under 60. That’s the range. If you’re 60 or above, you should rather apply for the Older Person’s Grant.
4. Only one Person per Household
SASSA only allows one person in the family to apply. And they usually prefer the one who’s supporting everyone, like the main breadwinner. So if your sibling already applied, you probably won’t get approved too.
5. You shouldn’t be Getting money from other Government Sources
If you’re already getting UIF, NSFAS, or another SASSA grant, you can’t apply. They check this through your ID number. But there’s one exception if you’re receiving the Child Support Grant, you can still apply for the SRD grant.
